First Congregational Church of Escondido has a specific mission in furthering the love of Christ by embracing diversity and serving with grace. At First Congregational, our worship services inspire us weekly to live out the message of Christ.  We are looking for a Director of Music. This person will be responsible for cultivating and leading the music ministry for the church that reflects the mission and theology of First Congregational of Escondido.

Position Description

The Director of Music, First Congregational Church of Escondido, helps develop and lead the worship music ministry for the church, in consultation with the senior pastor and other team members, in a way that is consistent with the mission, values, and theology of the church.

Purpose:  To develop and lead the worship music ministry for our church.

Responsibilities:

  • Select and plan music for Sundays and special services with the Senior Pastor to enhance the message or theme of the worship experience, including live and pre-recorded music

  • Participate in the creative planning of the Sunday and special services with the Senior Pastor and the Ministry and Worship Team

  • Recruit, equip, motivate, supervise and shepherd musicians

  • Conduct rehearsals and performances for the Chancel Choir

  • Develop musical teams and ensembles for services

  • Play organ and/or piano at worship services

  • Arrange for supply musicians when necessary

  • Communicate regularly with the Senior Pastor and staff.

  • Participate in the life and ministry of the church

  • Foster congregation education regarding music (articles for church monthly Echoes, occasional Sunday instruction, etc.)

  • Manage the church music budget

Qualifications:

  • Qualifying musical skills and competence

  • Ability to shepherd volunteer musicians in the Christian life

  • Ability to organize, coordinate, lead and motivate

  • Strong team player who collaborates with the rest of the staff and congregation

  • Committed to the church's vision, leadership, and people

  • Dependable, responsible, self-motivated and creative

  • Music degree is preferred but experience in leading, directing and planning music can be exchanged in lieu of education

Musical Competencies:

  • Play organ and/or piano

  • Ability in wide range of styles including Christian classics (hymns) but with a focus on contemporary music.

  • Guitar player a plus

The position is targeted for 18-25 hours per week
